Houses for Haiti... and a Rabbit Trail

While researching new ways to raise money for Haiti, I came across a great idea that I can't wait to try with my students.... "Houses for Haiti".  As Art teachers today, we are blessed with so many fun sites for finding creative lesson ideas, and often one leads to another, which leads to another... as happened to me with this lesson!  So, here's the "rabbit trail" that led to this great find... I first spotted this idea on a brand new blog called "Art in the...Middle School", which I found while reading a post at "The Art of Education".  No instructions, though (just a picture and lesson title), so I googled "Houses for Haiti" which led me to "The Art Teacher's Guide to the Internet", where I was finally directed to the link to "Houses for Haiti", a wonderful project by two Florida art teachers, Ellen McMillan and Ann Ayers. Watch their video here to see how your students can use cardboard scraps, markers, glue, and a "secret ingredient" to make these charming houses, turn them into magnets or pins, and raise their own $$ for Haiti. This project has raised over $237,000 so far!

  1. Those are cute! Have you ever used triple thick to cover stuff? It leaves a great hard and glossy finish. Might work great for magnets, etc.

  2. Triple Thick looks like a better option than the stuff they're using in the video, which has to be mixed to activate it. The store I shop at doesn't carry Triple Thick, but has something called "Diamond Glaze" which does the same thing. Just bought some to try it out!
