The popular Mexican holiday, "Day of the Dead" is just around the corner! If you live on the California Central Coast, don't miss your chance to get some great project ideas at my teacher workshop, "Teach Kids Art: 'Day of the Dead' Projects".... this weekend only - Saturday, September 24th, 2011 from 9am-noon at Palace Art & Office Supply in Capitola.
I'll be co-teaching this workshop once again with K-12 Spanish teacher, Catherine Murray. In our three hour workshop, you'll learn about the traditions and meanings surrounding "Dia de los Muertos", the Mexican holiday which honors ancestors and loved ones who have died. Often misunderstood, this festive, family-centered holiday occurs each year on November 1st and 2nd, and is not just a Mexican version of Halloween! Rather, it celebrates the cycle of life, highlighting the Mexican people's general acceptance of (rather than fear of) death. Participants in this workshop will create samples and take home complete lesson plans for four projects, adaptable to grades K-12. Plus, you'll enjoy traditional Mexican treats and leave with a Certificate of Completion for Professional Development!
Teachers are also invited to bring in their own favorite "Day of the Dead" projects or lesson plans to share (optional, of course!). This will be a fun morning of learning, camaraderie and inspiration! If you're in the area, please join us!

ReplyDeleteI taught art at a private school and wanted so much to do this.. they would not allow this.. but I love the way you did it... great idea... fun for kids ... and interesting culturally.
