I was so happy with the results that my Kinders had with our Cezanne-inspired still life paintings, that I wanted to take it a step further with my 1st grade classes....
As I showed my 1st graders some of Cezanne's still life paintings, we noticed that you could often see a dark edge around many of his shapes. So, this time after we finished "hiding the white paper" we used diluted black tempera paint (just a very small amount in a paper cup) and a skinny watercolor brush (size 2) to paint a thin black outline around each shape. It really made their paintings "pop"!
It was fascinating to watch my students' excitement grow as they got closer to completing their paintings and saw how wonderful they all looked. Even the adults in the room were saying things like, "I would frame that and hang it in my house!" Here are a few more examples... each one unique and totally beautiful!!
