Perfection
“The Persistence of Memory” by Salvador Dali
I thought I would start off the New Year (like so many people do) with a New Year's Resolution.... to become less of a perfectionist. Now I know that a goal is supposed to be specific and measurable, and this is neither, but I think I will still be able to tell when I accomplish it. After all, perfectionism leads to procrastination, so if I can conquer my perfectionist tendencies, I should find myself procrastinating less and accomplishing more in 2009. Perfectionism causes a major road block for artists, and it's especially heartbreaking to see this in young students. But how can I counsel them to resist perfectionism when I struggle with it myself??
Surrealist Salvador Dali, said it best, "Have no fear of perfection, you'll never reach it."To be a perfectionist is to allow precious time to "melt away". So, here's to a "less perfect" year with a lot more accomplished!
The one great thing about striving for perfection is the things you learn along the way to realizing that you'll never get there. Things you might not have learned if you were less obsessed.
ReplyDeleteOf course, you have to bail eventually and broaden out. Best wishes on doing that.
