Memorial Day Flag Designs

Here's a great lesson for Memorial Day... I did this with my 1st graders, but any age could have fun with it.  Easy to prep, no clean up, everyone was successful, and the kids LOVED it... you can't beat that!

Materials:
  • 9x12 white paper
  • Black "F" Sharpie
  • Red and blue markers
Directions:
1. Discuss the American flag and what it symbolizes.  (This is a great opportunity to talk about "freedom" and why we celebrate Memorial Day!)
2. Notice the features that make our flag unique (stars, stripes, red, white and blue).
3. Now, rearrange these features to create a new flag design!
4. See how using these same design elements allows these new flags to still look "American"!

(Note: This project can be used for any country by simply using the design elements found in that country's flag!)

  1. I just wanted to comment that I love your website! I love how it is dedicated to featuring artwork created by children and how you post art ideas and activities for them.
I am an art major and I don't think children art is appreciated as much these days. But children art opens my eyes to what they see in their own world and how they perceive things. Whenever my little brother brings something home from school like an art craft, it makes me smile.
He is even getting influenced in painting and drawing at 7 years old!
Love your ideas :)! Keep doing what your'e doing!
